TAFAWOQ hosted a ‘Masterclass in HSSE Leadership for Project Managers’ as part of its commitment to further develop the competences of project management professionals in Qatar.
The Masterclass, held in Doha on 10th and 11th February 2016, was attended by senior project managers and directors, HSSE managers, asset managers, and operations managers who are involved in projects and asset management in Qatar’s oil and gas industry.
The session was delivered by Ian Jewitt, HSSE Delivery Manager Integrated Gas at Shell and a senior facilitator. Michiel Kool, Managing Director and Chairman of Qatar Shell Companies and a former Executive Vice President for HSSE at Shell, Steve Norton, General Manager HSSE in Qatar Shell, and Israr Ahmed, Country Health Manager, Occupational Health at Qatar Shell; all presented as guest speakers during the two days session. Together, they bring decades of experience in senior safety leadership positions.
The event offered participants the opportunity to network with senior Shell executives, who shared their insights on how to acquire the required leadership and professional skills to become a successful project manager. Participants discussed past major disasters, lessons learned, and how to prevent them occurring in the future. Critically, the session also focused on workers’ welfare and how fostering a culture of care and wellbeing for workers creates a happy workforce that is both more productive and works more safely. Global case studies of best-in-class projects were presented, including the successful implementation of HSSE during the Pearl GTL Project in Ras Laffan.
Jewitt considers this workshop as a unique platform for knowledge-sharing between the project management professionals and their peers. He believes that the facilitation of practical, every day solutions and techniques to handle project assets and HSSE challenges is imperative to the industry, and is something we should all focus on. In his opinion this event enabled project managers to work towards achieving their HSSE leadership goals, and ultimately create a more unified culture across projects and organisations in Qatar.
TAFAWOQ aims to provide an environment that will support and foster the personal development of project management professionals, this workshop is one of many other workshops and events TAFAWOQ hosts hoping that to develop Qatar’s capability to deliver major projects without any harm to people is entirely in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
